Description of Project

Client

Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) is a statutory agency under the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities.

Background

Malaysia’s Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS), implemented separately in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak since 2013, requires strengthening to meet rising global regulatory demands. With increasing pressure from international markets, the project aims to review and harmonise TLAS frameworks to enhance compliance, traceability, and sustainability in the timber supply chain.

Challenges & Expectations

Key challenges include fragmented TLAS implementation across regions, rising international compliance requirements like the EUDR, and non-tariff trade barriers. There is limited internal capacity to undertake digital and regulatory harmonisation. The project is expected to produce a practical, unified framework aligned with global market expectations and national policies while strengthening Malaysia’s legal credibility and digital readiness.
