Description of Project
Client
Malaysian Cocoa Board is an agency under the Ministry of Plantations and Commodities Malaysia with the objective main objective is to develop the cocoa industry in Malaysia to be well integrated and competitive in the global market. The MCB focuses on increasing productivity and efficiency in cocoa upstream production and enhancing downstream activities.
Background
Cocoa cultivation in Malaysia has declined significantly from its peak in 1989. In light of growing global cocoa demand and strict international regulations on sustainability such as the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), MCB is exploring ways to expand cocoa production sustainably via Low Carbon Emission (LCE) integrated plantation of cocoa and other crops, particularly oil palm.
Our Role on the Project
Scope of Services
To identify, analyse, evaluate, and submit recommendations for the development of Low Carbon Emission (LCE) integrated cocoa and oil palm plantations and to formulate the best development model, strategy, and action plan for the implementation of LCE integrated cocoa and oil palm plantations.
Solutions / Outcomes Delivered
- Developed an LCE plantation framework with best agronomic and climate-smart practices for cocoa-oil palm integration.
- Conducted market analysis and financial modelling to demonstrate financial viability to attract investment into the recommended plantation model.
- Assessed carbon sequestration potential and ensured compliance with EUDR and other sustainability requirements.
- Recommended policy incentives, partnerships, and conducted engagements to encourage industry participation.
