A new report compiled by the world Economic Forum (WEF) reveals some of the breakthrough innovations for year 2019:
- Bioplastics for a Circular Economy: Advanced solvents and enzymes that can transform woody wastes into better biodegradable plastics that are more environment-friendly.
- Social Robots: Droids friends and assistants that use artificial intelligence to automate process and communication.
- Tiny Lenses for Miniature Devices: Thin, flat metalenses that will enable greater miniaturization of microscopes and other laboratory tools.
- Disordered Proteins as Drug Targets: A class of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) that drive illnesses from cancer to neurodegenerative diseases.
- Smarter Fertilizers Can Reduce Environmental Contamination: Controlled-release fertilizers that can ensure significantly higher levels of nutrients reach the crops, leading to higher yields with less fertilizers.
- Collaborative Telepresence: Leverage on augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and 5G network to enable virtual communication and physical interaction with remote environments.
- Advanced Food Tracking and Packaging: Better traceability of foods from farm to table using Blockchain and foods conditions detection using sensors tags.
- Safer Nuclear Reactors: Resilient fuels and innovative reactors that could enable a resurgence of nuclear power.
- DNA Data Storage: DNA-based information-storage system as a new way to handle massive amounts of information to tackle the limit of data-storage.
- Utility-Scale Storage of Renewable Energy: Lithium-ion batteries as the utility-scale energy-storage that enables sustainable energy solutions.
