THE 22nd annual Malayalee Aviyal charity golf tournament and dinner will be held on May 11 to raise funds for Dignity and Services, a non-governmental organisation that assists people with learning disabilities.

Organising chairman Girish Ramachandran said a substantial surplus of funds from the event would go to charities and welfare homes.

The fee for the golf tournament at the Tropicana Golf and Country Resort, Petaling Jaya, is inclusive of lunch, buggy service and dinner at RM380. The nine-course dinner at the same venue at 6.30pm is priced at RM1,500 per table.

The idea of getting Malayalees together for a round of golf and fellowship was first mooted in 1996 by the late Datuk Mike Krishnan and the late Christie Robes in London.

“The main objectives of the Aviyal golf event are to provide an opportunity for Malayalees to meet and interact, and give a sense of pride among participants of our origin, and in the process, be involved in helping the less fortunate.

“It is one of Malaysia’s longest running charity golf events. Since its inception on April 25, 1997, the annual get-together has grown and today there are competitors from New Zealand, Australia and Singapore

“We have also donated RM360,000 to several Malaysian charities,” he said.

Girish said this year, the organising committee had decided on supporting Dignity and Services (www.dignityandservices.org) based on the work they did.

Dignity and Services is an advocacy movement that speaks and acts on behalf of people with learning disabilities.

Girish said Malayalee golfers who are keen to take part in the tournament or attending the dinner could contact him at 012-6909 600 or email to agr9600@gmail.com.

The dinner is open to all on a first-come, first-served basis.
