Does Malaysia have sufficient capacity to handle a medical emergency?

The spike in Covid-19 infections reached 23,564 on 20th August 202. With the increased average daily cases in the past week, it was evident that the nation’s healthcare system is on the brink of collapse. Across the Klang Valley, 85% of the hospital beds are occupied. Hospitals are struggling to make more beds available for both Covid-19 and non-Covid patients. In a bid to tackle the shortage of beds, HTAR has even converted its orthopaedic, surgical, and medical wards into Covid wards, based on an individual account. This poses the question: Do Malaysia have sufficient capacity to handle a medical emergency?

27Group August Happenings

August was a busy month as 27Group’s Executive Director, Girish Ramachandran was invited to moderate and be on the panel for a couple of webinars. The 2021 Malaysian Healthcare Conference brings together senior executives and experts to discuss how to capitalise on new opportunities in the sector, Girish moderated the panel session focusing on the Expansion of Private Equity Involvement in Healthcare.

On 17 August, Girish was invited to be one of the panelists for the launching of the Tan Sri Omar Center for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (STI) Studies. The focus of this session was Powering the Nation’s Agenda for a Harmonious, Prosperous, Progressive and sustainable Malaysia - the Strategic Role of Science, Technology and Social Innovation.

Girish was once again invited to a panel discussion with industry experts on Gearing up Digitalisation and Automation in Malaysia organised by Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry that was held on 19 August 2021.

Meanwhile, on 22 August, 27Project’s Senior Advisor, John Cock was invited to a panel discussion on Right and Duties of Adjudicator: Remedies Available for a Challenge organised by Asian International Arbitration Centre. The session gave an overview of the duties and obligations of adjudicators and the wide range of situations where a breach of natural justice concerns may be raised.

Chong Sue Thin is an Analyst with 27Advisory. Graduated with Bachelors of Finance and Investment from UCSI University, Sue Thin is well diverse in areas such as business finance, market research, financial analysis and investment analysis.

After gaining several years of experience, she is competent in accounting and financial duties including, maintaining financial records, managing budgets, performing risk assessments and business strategy reviews.
